Participation of the President of the Scientific Council of the HFRI in the Event of the funded Project NAVMAT

The President of the Scientific Council (S.C.) of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI), Professor Xeni Chryssochoou, participated in the presentation of the results of the funded Project NAVMAT “Development of a knowledge-based system for naval materials failure,” on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at the Conference Centre of NCSR “Demokritos.”

In her welcome address, she stressed the importance of basic research, which can provide applicable results that can assist such a key service for the country, such as the Navy.

She went on to say that the HFRI supports research carried out at Higher Military Educational Institutions and welcomes collaborations with other research institutions, such as the one between the Hellenic Naval Academy (HNA) and the NCSR “Demokritos.”

Finally, she wished the Project every success both in its implementation and in the next phase of its development.

Members of the Scientific Council of the HFRI, Konstantinos Charitidis and Konstantinos Galiotis, the President of the NCSR “Demokritos” Georgios Nounesis, the Director at the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications, NCSR “Demokritos” Evaggelos Karkaletsis and the Dean of the HNA Georgios Galanis graced the Event with their presence.

On the part of the Navy and the Ministry of National Defence, the following senior officers and officials were present:

The Vice Commander of the HNA, Commodore Charalambos Gavalas, welcomed the Event, representing the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff (HNGS), Vice Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras, Second-in-command of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and Commander of the HNA Vice Admiral Christos Sasiakos, the Director General of the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) of the Ministry of National Defence Vice Admiral Engineer Retired Aristides Alexopoulos. Also present were the HNGS Branch Chief D, Chief Engineer Sotirios Tsamilis and Chief Engineer Vasilis Vasilogiannakopoulos, who participated in his capacity as a member of the NAVMAT research team (from the inception of the idea to the present day).

The strong representation of the country’s maritime and academic/research community at the Event was complemented by important personalities from the Defence Industry, Energy, Construction, Metallurgy, Telecommunications and Shipping.

The NAVMAT research project was supported by the Foundation within the framework of the 1st Call for HFRI Research Projects to support Faculty Members and Researchers.
